What is a labyrinth?
A labyrinth is an ancient symbol of many religions and cultures.
It combines the imagery of the circle and spiral into a meandering path.
A labyrinth has only a single path leading to and from its center.
It is unicursal. The way in is the way out.
The labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again, out into the world.
It is a model of that path and has long been used as a medication and prayer tool.
A labyrinth is most often a design laid in or on the floor, or created in an outdoor
setting, such as a garden or a field.
Some labyrinths date as far back as 4,000 years. They can be found all over the world,
in countries such as Greece, France, Sweden, Peru, England, Iceland and the United States.
There are a variety of types of labyrinths which include: Concentric, Roman, Chartres,
Classical and Medieval.
Labyrinths are usually designed in accordance with sacred geometry. Through proportion,
placement and position, the mind can be brought to a state of rest, comfort and harmony.
